Billabong Hydraulic Ram

The Cheapest water you can pump - Water pumping water

Although most people are familiar with the water wheel, few have heard of the water ram; a comparatively small and ingenious pump. The Hydraulic Ram was widely used in the 19th and early 20th centuries for lifting water to a tank or reservoir far above the water level from which the water originally came. The Hydraulic Ram used no fuel and was operated solely by the water itself.

Provided there is water that would otherwise be flowing to waste, the Billabong Hydraulic Ram can be used. The "Ram" will use the power of the flowing water to pump a little water to a higher height. It does this by using air; the air trapped in the dome of the Ram is compressible, and as this air is put under pressure it is able to exert a pressure on the water in the dome and this power is used to pump water.

What a beautifully simple system....
